Flower shows are so beloved in the UK that there is nationwide coverage of the most famous ones on television and much media interest for more local shows too! From Royal Horticulture Societies to village flower competitions, the UK loves a garden gathering to discuss and explore the nations favourite pastime. While in the past garden shows were only for the professional and keen gardener, today gardening and flower shows have become a favoured day out for all the family.
Here are a few of our favourite UK Flower Shows:
Known the world over as a prestigious and incredibly well attended flower show, Chelsea has become a byword for quality, style and modern gardening. The first show was held in 1862 – then known as the Great Spring Show – and the relationship with the Chelsea Hospital began in 1902, and has continued to be the core of the RHS gardening calendar. The highlights of this show are undoubtedly the show gardens, featuring the possibilities of garden design as imagined by the very creative garden designers that work hard to bring to life such special places.
Although not as prestigious as its Chelsea counterpart, the Hampton Court Flower Show holds its own as the largest flower show in the world. Another gardening spectacular, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, featuring show gardens, flower tents, talks and demonstrations. This show has a very family friendly feel and focuses more on environmental issues and growing your own fruit and veg rather than the prestige of a perfect bloom. Zany, slightly crazy and often alternative gardens can be found here along with the opportunity to buy your favourite gardening accessories, plants and flowers.
Now held twice a year, the Harrogate Flower show is blooming! With increased attendance at each event, it is known as the most prestigious independent gardening show in the UK. Run by the North of England Horticultural Society for over 100 years, all profits from the show are used to promote horticulture in the North of England. The Harrogate show has a great combination of innovative garden designs, plant nurseries, gardening shopping opportunities all showcasing how great a garden can be! Recently rated by Which? as the UK’s best gardening event this is a show for all the family and not to be missed.
As an offshoot of the popular BBC TV show this gardening event is as popular as ever, attracting many of TV’s gardening faces with advice, talks and book signings. This well publicised event includes show gardens, and a floral marquee for the keen gardeners and plenty other attractions for the entire family to enjoy.
Held annually and attracting top exhibitors from all over the world, the Shrewsbury Flower Show is packed with competitions, exhibitions, entertainment and of course tons of gardening advice from experts in a wide range of fields. They also have a popular firework display which gets great reviews each year.
