Garden design – now online
At North Leeds Garden Design we pride ourselves on giving every client the same high level of customer service. With the advent of our online design service this hasn’t changed. We feel this offering is as good as our more traditional face-to-face service; just an extension to our already great, award-winning garden design service.
How it works
We will make a visit to your site and have a preliminary discussion with you. Following this we will work up our initial proposal for your outdoor space, this will form the contract between us and include the fees for the design. We will then consult with you at key stages as we develop the design.
There will be an online meeting to present each plan.
Before our first visit with you we will send you some useful information and a Questionnaire for you to complete. This gives us a good understanding of your requirements before we meet.
If government rules allow, we will visit your outdoor space to get an initial idea of the space and existing features, whilst you remain safely indoors.
While still on site we’ll have a discussion and makes notes about your wishes and hopes for the garden. We’ll then tour the garden again taking photos, and making notes of any particular issues identified during our conversation.
Our land surveyor will survey the garden (providing government rules allow) and then we begin designing.
Concept, master and planting plans
These three stages take us to the final agreed plan for your garden. Each stage builds upon the last, amending, refining and adding greater clarity and detail.
Following the concept plan meeting we will post a colour copy of the plan and perspectives to you; with black and white copies of the master plan and planting plans sent to you following each of those meetings.
We use Vectorworks Landmark, an industry standard design software, to draw up our ideas into plan format. We will share these as pdfs by email.
Depending upon any government restrictions and your location, we will normally be able to put you in touch with a landscape contractor to realise your dream garden for you – installing the hard landscaping and preparing the beds for planting.
We offer a planting service in the West & North Yorkshire areas, and beyond where this is practicable. Alternatively, you can carry out the planting yourself. Either way we will provide you with an estimate for the plants and associated planting costs. We will liaise with you in advance of planting, to help minimise contact when we are working in your garden. Once planted, we will provide you with a care plan to help you keep your new plants thriving.
What is planting design?
A planting design is for a particular, pre-existing part of your garden such as a border. It is for plants only, ie no hard landscaping.
NB If you ask us to change the layout of the garden borders or add new beds we would regard this as a garden re-design, for which different fees apply. We will discuss this with you, if appropriate, at our initial visit.
Why choose a planting design?
A planting design is particularly useful if you are happy with the layout of your garden but would like an area updating, or an ugly feature camouflaged. Or you may have just moved into a new house, or have recently had an extension and surrounding hard landscaping installed, and just need to add the plants.
Before our first visit with you we will send you some useful information and a Questionnaire for you to complete and return to us. This gives us a good understanding of your requirements before we meet.
Providing government rules allow us to travel to your garden we will visit and walk round your outdoor space whilst you remain safely Indoors.
While still on site we’ll have a further discussion and makes notes about your wishes and hopes for the new border – including what if any plants are to remain, your preferred style, favourite plants and colours, and any other considerations. Once we have this, we’ll then tour the garden and take photos, making a note of any particular features identified during our conversation.
Following this visit we will put together a short proposal for you, to agree what is planned for your outdoor space. This will form the contract between us for the design of your garden and will also set out our design fees.
For small borders this will not be necessary as we will measure the size of the space at our visit. For a larger border(s) our land surveyor will survey the garden (providing government rules allow), and then we begin designing.
If our land surveyor is unable to carry out this essential task we will send you information about what we need and how to record it so that you can take key measurements for us.
Planting plan presentation meeting
Your planting design plan will be presented online using Zoom. We will discuss our proposal with you using mood boards, as well as the plan itself.
We will then carry out any modifications and post the finalised plan to you.

Some of our clients prefer to start with a consultation to help them think through what they want and what the options may be.
Our One Day Garden Consultation has been especially designed to meet this need. This enables us to spend the morning with you in the garden, finding out about your wishes and developing ideas for layout or planting, advising on problem areas of the garden, etc as needed. This is followed up with a half-day back at the office to carry out further development, for example a brief summary of ideas generated & actions agreed; a moodboard with planting ideas; links to useful websites to view materials, etc.
This could be for you, for example, if:
- you have a specific garden problem you need help with;
- you would like reassurance about your own ideas;
- you are concerned about the feasibility of new hard landscaping.
We don’t expect to resolve everything in the 2-3 hours we have available at your garden, but we are usually able to generate and progress ideas that will take the garden forward.
If following a Consultation you book a Garden Design we will offer this at a preferential rate.
