Design for a small garden

We tend to think of garden design as a cousin of Grand Designs, we assume it has to be on a grand scale, with a total makeover from ground zero and with a budget and ambition to match.

In fact, we love take on modest projects, or work with the grain of an existing scheme; even bringing to fruition a stalled project, as we did here with this intimate courtyard that had run out of steam on the final stretch.

Following a kitchen extension, this family had had oak decking, paths and raised beds installed in their sunny courtyard garden.  But the planting had got left behind.  

Contemporary design and low maintenance for a modern garden

We gave the whole space a complete update. We developed a planting scheme that extended the palette and added architectural sophistication to the minimalist geometric shapes of the of the hard landscaping. Using a mix of existing planting, and new plants in tones of lavender, grey and cream which perfectly matched the hard landscaping, we met the clients’ wishes for a smart and low maintenance space.

An all seasons garden

A small garden that is highly visible from the living space needs visual interest all year round. With today’s weather you never know when the sun will shine and give you a chance to grab some precious time in the garden. So we ensured that the planting had strong textures and plenty of evergreens so that, whatever time of year, this chic courtyard garden will be a delight to sit amongst or gaze out upon.

Implementation

The raised beds now look clean and bright, and the climbing plants renovated. The beds are full of good soil, helping the new plants to thrive.
